Cadet Open Sailing 12th August

Published 12:54 on 14 Aug 2025
Our cadets were treated to a marvellous couple of hours on board our regular fleet of volunteer boats on the last of the season Open Sailing event.
This event was aimed at giving our young RFYC cadets, instructors and helpers some experience of sailing on a keel boat and to learn the many differences associated in doing so stepping up from their usual dinghies.
The weather throughout the day suggested that there would be very little wind for sailing in the evening and skippers made ready to take the cadets on board and just show them the major differences of equipment involved in sailing a keel boat compared to dinghy sailing.
It was a pleasant surprise however, when a light breeze made an appearance and all boats taking part managed to find just enough wind to fill their sails and sail over to the deep channel marker before having to return to harbour. One intrepid skipper even found the limited time that was available to them to teach his guests the intricacies of flying a spinnaker.
These events are aimed at giving our guests just a small taste of what we offer as a club at RFYC and hopefully those guests that have attended throughout the season will have enjoyed the experience and will pursue their interest in sailing with us at Granton.
The success of Open Sailing at the club would not be possible without the dedication that our skippers and crew have made to it throughout the season. Appreciation goes to the following boats that have made themselves available and taken part: One for the Road, Ingrid, Moon White, Gonzo, Eriskay, Cockenzie Lass, Stargazer, Solveig, Orithya, Grateful, Silkie.
Appreciation must also be extended to the many volunteers who tended the bar on most of these events, Hannah and Mark for covering the admin side of things and to Piotr for getting us all back safely on the launch.
Fair winds for the remainder of the season!
