Light winds for Open Sailing

Published 11:54 on 31 Jul 2025
Challenging conditions on our latest Open Sailing event gave skippers plenty of time to consider their sail plans. With very light Easterly winds and calm seas it was surprising that only one boat ("Ingrid"), out of the eight that participated, opted to fly their spinnaker for a short while. Perhaps the others couldn't quite remember where in the attic they had placed them?
It was a pleasure to see Mark Primrose take to the water in his delightful boat "Grateful". However conditions were so light that even she was finding it difficult to sail to her full potential.
On "Solveig", their usual way of summoning up the wind Gods by putting the kettle on for a brew unfortunately had no effect. However, it was lovely just to be out on the water, even if it was just for a few hours "bobbing" around with like minded folks.
Our return to the clubhouse for refreshments gave everyone a chance to reflect on the evening and the opportunity for contacts to be exchanged for those guests wishing to pursue sailing at RFYC.
Thanks go out to Fiona Harrison and Torben Sell for tending the bar and looking after our guests and skippers needs.
The next Open Sailing (the last of the season) is on Tuesday 12th August 2025. This particular evening is being offered to RFYC Cadets with the objective of providing them with an experience of sailing on larger keel boats.
Looking forward to seeing you then!
