Open Sailing 18th August- Cadets only!

Our Cadets were given the opportunity to experience keelboat sailing in the latest Open Sailing event that took place at RFYC.

Nine cadets and volunteers took to the water in what could be described as fairly brisk conditions. With S/Westerly winds gusting up to 27 knots and moderate seas, it was thought a sail around Wardie Bay would be a safer option for all concerned.

On leaving the harbour most of the four yachts taking part headed out towards deeper water before gybing towards Wardie bay. This gave the cadets a fine opportunity to practice their skills with many of them taking the helm and putting the boats through their paces.

Hopefully the skippers took advantage of having these young sailors on board and were able to pick up some tips from them!

Returning to the clubhouse for refreshments gave everyone the chance to reflect upon the evening, and the feedback received from cadets, skippers and volunteers indicates that the evenings experience was enjoyed and warmly received by all.

This was the last in the series of the 2026 season Open Sailing events in which has seen around fifty guests signing up to experience sailing with us at RFYC. In the past two months, this has resulted in at least seven new memberships being taken out with the club and we look forward to welcoming these new members onto the water in the coming weeks.

All this, of course, would not have been possible without the time and dedication that our many skippers and admin staff have been prepared to offer throughout the season.

For this, we are extremely grateful!

The end of the season is quickly closing in but before then let's hope for more fair winds and many sunny days to experience the wonderful sailing waters that we enjoy here at RFYC.
