Guests on our most recent Open Sailing evening were treated by our skippers to a fantastic couple of hours on the water.

After a challenging bout of logistic juggling, our 20 guests were introduced to their designated skippers and were soon on their way.

With south westerly winds gusting 15-24 knots, the majority of boats taking part decided to go upriver beyond Inchmickery, with one intrepid boat (Ingrid) managing to get around Inchcolm island. Others were more than happy to stay closer to the harbour.

Thankfully, the thunder and lightning which was predicted less than 24 hours prior to the event did not manifest itself, but some of those staying closer to shore were unfortunately caught out by heavy rain falls when the weather system eased its way in from the south. This climatic activity however resulted in some spectacular displays of cloud formations, and we were all treated by the appearance of a double rainbow afterwards- worth getting damp for!

Back in harbour safely, our guests were invited up to the clubhouse for light refreshments. This gave our guests the chance to see more of the club and an opportunity for our skippers to answer any of their questions.

Our guests were absolutely delighted with the experience that they had, with many having expressed a genuine interest in joining our club. Hopefully this will result in us gaining a few more members to the club and give them a chance to share with us, at RFYC, in the delight that it is to sail the waters around Granton.

Boats taking part were Ingrid, Solveig, Anna Ross, Cockenzie Lass, Moon White, Gonzo, One For The Road, Glengarry and Orithya.

Our last Open Sailing event this year is on Tuesday 18th August 2026, and is being offered to our Cadet squad and volunteers to give them the experience of sailing in a keel boat.

Fair winds until then,

Stuart Fowler

RFYC Open Sailing Co-ordinator.
