SPRING TALK: The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, 7 for 7:30pm, 31 March
Published 17:24 on 30 Mar 2022
Join us tomorrow night to hear from Paul Taylor, a local Trust skipper for the wonderful Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.
Dame Ellen MacArthur needs no introduction to the sailing world, single-handedly circumnavigating the world at the age of 28. In 2003 she set up a sailing charity called the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust that inspires young people aged 8-24, through sailing and outdoor adventure, to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer.
We are delighted to welcome our speaker, Paul Taylor, who has been a Trust skipper for 4 years. The illustrated talk will last for about forty-five minutes and after that Paul will be very happy to answer any questions on how you can get involved. The medics among our membership are particularly valuable. You gain the very special status of 'Unicorn' by giving your time and expertise.
The bar will be open. Please arrive 7 for 7:30 to be seated.
This is a free event for members and their guests, so reserve your tickets below.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Paul has been a Trust skipper for four years, and can describe the work of the Trust from the sharp end, from being on board and at sea with the young people. Paul is an RYA/MCA commercial Ocean Yachtmaster, formerly an RYA Cruising Instructor, a sometime delivery skipper, a 'milebuilders' skipper, at one time a commercial salmon fisherman and even a lighthouse keeper. Paul usually skippers for the Trust on the Clyde but is sometimes to be found around the Solent. He keeps his own boat, 'Hirta' a Rival 34 in Granton during the winter but has a mooring in Salen, Loch Sunart for the summer. He has said that skippering for the Trust is the best, most meaningful and most satisfying of his varied sailing 'gigs'. He says he likes the professionalism of the organisation, the commitment, hard work and humour of the team involved in the voyages. Most of all he likes seeing the obvious joy that the sailing trips bring to young people and the way the young people take on and succeed in new challenges. As he says, "It's all so worthwhile!".
This is a sailing story, for sailing people, told by a sailor.
