FOR SALE: "Birubi" 1980 Colvic Countess 28

1786659 orig

1980 Colvic Countess 28 bilge keel yacht in very good condition with nothing needing to be done.

Birubi (previously Maritza) came out of the water for winter in October 2024 and is currently on the hard at Granton Harbour in Edinburgh. Lift in will be mid April 2025 for which there will be a small charge for your share of the crane hire circa £60.

Only selling as I have purchased a larger yacht.

Birubi has been a great first boat giving me no trouble, she sails well for a bilge keeler regularly on or around 5 to 6 knots in favourable conditions and we average 4.5 knots on passages. She wing on wings particularly well, and will comfortably motor along at 4.5 knots all day very efficiently if needed.

Cabin:
See pics the interior is in excellent condition with a large v berth with infill that is particularly long so will comfortably sleep anyone well in excess of 6ft. Good sized hatch, insulated roof and lined with carpet there is storage shelving, cupboardsand LED reading lights. Under the berth is the anchor chain locker and 2 very large storage areas.
Next aft on the stb side is a large hanging locker. Opposite is a roomy heads with LED light, Jabsco toilet, storage, port hole and a slide out sink with fresh water tap.
The main saloon has a raised table and bench seats with 12V, USB and 240V outlets nearby. I spend quite a bit of time working onboard and it is very comfortable. There is a 60L flexible water tank under the floor beneath your feet. The table drops easily to make a double berth and there are massive storage bays under each bench seats, the aft one containing the fresh water pump and a fold out rubbish bin.
On the stb side is a long seat with a lee cloth which can be used as a single berth, although narrow. Underneath and above there is vast storage.
The galley has a gimballed 2 hob gas cooker with grill and oven. This is only a few years old and hardly used, the oven is great.
There is an ice box (not a fridge), single sink, fresh water tap and ample storage.
To stb is a very deep single berth sufficient to sleep in + store items aft of your feet it is so deep. Under the berth is the battery bay with x2 110ah AGMs, 240V charger and the battery and elec isolator master switch.
Above the berth is another storage area as well as the instrument panel, USB charging ports, old skool stereo and diesel heater control panel.
Headroom is about 6'0" in the entryway, 5'10-11"ish in the rest of the cabin and 5'9-10" in the heads. The v berth is 6'0" with the hatch. Up to 5'10" you'll be jumping about the place, any taller you'll be doing the Sam Elliot neck bend.

Engine & Mechanicals:
She has a meticulously maintained Bukh DV20 which starts first time every time and runs perfectly with no oil or water leaks or weeps.
The engine is acid flushed and anti freeze filled every winter, the oil is changed during and following the season using quality Morris marine oil and Bukh filters. There is a salt water intake filter and an auto bilge pump fitted in the engine bay bilge.
The engine had a top end rebuild about 4 years ago and more recently has had a water pump rebuild, new thermostat fitted and alternator wiring replaced. All preventative maintenance gets done.
Impeller is renewed every season.
Last winter the cutlass bearing was replaced, the packing in the stern gland renewed and the rubber flex hose and clamps replaced.

Cockpit:
The best feature of the Countess 28 is the large deep cockpit making for dry and very safe sailing even in big following seas which we tested this summer on a 500NM return trip to Orkney.
3 large deep cockpit lockers, the fwd port side allowing access to the rear of the engine, gearbox and drivetrain and the 60L plastic fuel tank.
The diesel heater was professionally fitted above the stb locker with its own diesel tank.
2 gas bottles are strapped under the rudder stock out of the way and access to the cockpit is by fold down swim ladder to aft.
There is a small (30L) waterproof storage cupboard in the aft stb cnr of the cockpit.
Fenders, lines and various stuff included along with some spare filters and parts.

On & Below Deck:
CQR anchor
Manual windlass
50m of good condition 8mm chain + 20m of anchor rode.
Spare anchor and rode
Boat hook
Canopy
Kid or pet netting
The deck grip is ageing but still effective.
New EVA foam flooring was fitted in the cockpit in 2024 making it grippy and comfortable underfoot.
*My next job was to replace the ageing cockpit seating with this same Marine EVA foam it would transform the cockpit.

Mast & Sails:
Inmast furling and headsail furler so you do not ever need to leave the safety of the cockpit.
Sails are age unknown but in good condition and were cleaned and checked with a couple of minor repairs by Saildoctor at Port Edgar in winter 2023.
There is also a new and unused jib and spinnaker with sock system.
Standing rigging age is not verified, but I was told and the survey confirmed that some had been replaced likely by the previous owner himself so no documentation. It is in good safe condition and is inspected every year as the mast is removed for winter.
Running rigging is ageing and I would suggest replacing a few lines over the next few years.

Steering:
Nicely made timber tiller in great condition.
The brass tiller stock was refurbished and beefed up in 2023.
The rudder foot was refurbished in 2022 and there is no play in the rudder bearings.

Electronics & Electrical:
VHF with DSC (new mast top aerial and cable fitted in 2024)
Raymarine ST1000+ auto helm in perfect working order with new plugs fitted to it and the cockpit last season.
Battle stick tiller extension.
Raymarine i40 depth and speed instrument.
NASA Clipper wireless wind anemometer and instrument (new in 2022).
NASA Marine Supernova Mastlight Combi Tri and Anchor L.E.D. fitted in 2024.
Mast wiring removed and replaced in 2024.
New anchor light and deck lights fitted in 2024.

Plenty of other pics I can share and I'm happy to do a live video walk around if you are not local.

Any questions feel free to ask.
