WINTER TALK: Restoration Forth!

3rd March 2022, 19:30 - 22:00

Restoration Forth! A community-led vision to restore seagrass habitats and oyster populations in the Firth of Forth

We are honoured and delighted to be hosting a talk as part of our Winter Series by Dr Bill Sanderson and Dr Richard Lilley of the Restoration Forth team. Dr Sanderson led the multi-award-winning Dornoch Environmental Enhancement Project: a project already successfully restoring up to 4 million oysters to the Dornoch Firth. Dr Lilley, CEO of Project Seagrass is an expert in the development of seagrass restoration projects across the UK and around the world.

Seagrass, often described as the ocean's unsung hero, provides important habitat for marine life and is an efficient store for climate-warming carbon emissions. Oyster reefs, which once flourished in the Forth estuary before being fished to extinction, remove pollutants from the water and provide sanctuary for a wide variety of sea life. Restoring the two species is predicted to have multiple benefits, including enhancing the coastal environment, offering nature-based methods of soaking up greenhouse gases and encouraging local people to connect with the sea. Over the course of the Restoration Forth project, which runs over three years, around four hectares of seagrass meadows will be restored and 30,000 oysters introduced in the Forth.

How can you get involved?

Watch this recent film, Seawilding by our friends at Loch Craignish to see how successful and enriching restoration can be.

The Newhaven Community Choir, formed in honour of the famous Newhaven Fisherwives Choir, will perform a selection of traditional songs celebrating the fishing industry in the Forth.

Please arrive 19:30 for the choir who will introduce the songs, explaining their link to the Firth of Forth, and sing from 19:45. The talk will begin at 20:00.
