RYA Marine Radio Course

6th April, 09:30 - 18:00

The Club is hosting the RYA Marine Radio Course on the 6th of April from 9.30 -16.00 in the Club House. This course is for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board, and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The fee for the course is £90. A handbook will be issued prior to the course for pre-reading.

An optional 2-hour exam (16.00-18.00) will be held at the end of the day by an independent RYA appointed moderator.
BEFORE THE TRAINING/EXAM DAY, YOU MUST COMPLETE A RYA SRC EXAM APPLICATION FORM AND BRING IT WITH YOU ON THE DAY WITH A PASSPORT SIZED PHOTO. A fee is payable directly to the RYA (£76) for this and is booked via https://www.rya.org.uk/exams.

The Short-Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and handheld equipment using International channels.

Course topics include:

The basics of radio operation

The correct frequencies (channels) to be used

Distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures

Making ship to shore telephone calls

Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)

Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)

Search and Rescue (SART)
