PEYC Three Inches race (passage race)

31st August, 09:00 - 17:00

Passage Race round the Forth run by PEYC and open to all other Forth yacht clubs.

To encourage more inter-club competition, PEYC invites local yacht racing and cruising clubs to join in the Three Inches Trophy on Sun 31st Aug. It is more of a passage planning challenge and there's no conventional mass start since competitors choose their own start time and location. Yachts may start from either PEYC at Port Edgar, ABC at Aberdour, BSC at Burntisland or FCYC/RFYC at Granton, at any time between 10:00 & 13:00, finishing back at the same place. The course passes those clubs going clock-wise around Inchgarvie and Inchcolm, but may pass either side of Inchmickery to accommodate deeper draft yachts at LW. It is sailed over a mid-day LW neap tide so that competitors have sufficient time to both leave from, and return to, tide restricted harbours. Leith LW will be 2.1m at 13:36 BST with a tide range of only 2.2m, minimising tidal currents. Leith HW beforehand will be 4.4m at 08:26 BST and 4.3m at 20:51 BST afterwards.

The course for 2025 has Forth Ports channel buoy #16 included to keep competitors clear of Drum Sands. The course length is about 18 nm and competitors shall record their own start, intermediate passing & finish times.

There will be classes for racing yachts in FYCA Div-1 (FYCA Progressive handicap < 975) and Div-2 (>= 975) with a Restricted Sail option, defined as no spinnaker or cruising chute, for which a handicap adjustment is given. There will also be a class for cruising yachts that don't normally race, with separate White Sail results. Since competitors will be out of sight of each other and the race organisers, Category 4 of the FYCA Safety Regulations shall apply.

The Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions will be on the PEYC website. Entry is free and made by submitting an email to the PEYC Sailing Secretary.

It wouldn't be practical to have a post-race gathering on the day because competitors will be finishing at different times and locations. PEYC will instead organise a social event at Port Edgar a few days after the race to announce the results and award prizes.

Jim Scott - PEYC Sailing Secretary - 7th Dec 2024
